Why 1 becomes 幺 in digit strings

The problem is (qī), the digit 7. Said quickly over a bad phone line or across a noisy lobby, and are too close for comfort: two short, high-pitched syllables that end in the same vowel sound. Mishear one digit in a phone number and the whole string is useless, so speakers fixed the weak link. In any number read digit by digit (phone numbers, room numbers, ID numbers, flight-style codes) the digit 1 is replaced by (yāo), a syllable that cannot be confused with anything else on the digit list.

Note what this rule does not touch. In quantities and composed numbers, 1 is still , with its usual tone behavior: yī in isolation, yì before a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd tone syllable as in 一百 (yìbǎi, 100) and 一千 (yìqiān, 1,000), and yí before a 4th tone syllable as in 一万 (yíwàn, 10,000). The swap is strictly a digit-string convention. Your ear needs to file yāo as a fourth pronunciation of "1" and recognize it instantly.

A mainland mobile number has 11 digits, and nobody reads them as one undifferentiated stream. The standard delivery is a 3-4-4 rhythm: three digits, a small pause, four digits, a pause, four digits. Take a clearly fictional example, 139 0123 4567. Read aloud, it sounds like this:

The 3-4-4 grouping is a gift to the listener. It matches how the numbers are printed and stored, and it gives you two built-in pauses to commit a chunk to memory before the next one arrives. Room numbers and IDs follow the same rules

The digit-string conventions are not phone-specific. Hotel room numbers, apartment numbers, ID numbers, and verification codes all read digit by digit with the same substitutions. The hard part is that an 11-digit string at native speed arrives in about four seconds, and your brain has to do three things at once: decode each syllable, buffer the current chunk, and write down the previous one. Any hesitation, like translating sì into "four" into the numeral 4, costs you the next two digits. Reading about cannot fix that.
